
Ms. Anna Gkountelia is a UK-trained Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon with advanced expertise in aesthetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery. She is recognised for her meticulous surgical precision, refined aesthetic judgement and commitment to achieving natural, harmonious results while upholding the highest standards of safety and patient care.She holds a substantive Consultant post at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT), based at Queen’s Hospital, since January 2020. In April 2024, she was appointed Clinical Lead of the Ophthalmology Department, where she oversees clinical governance, service development and the strategic direction of ophthalmic care across the Trust. Her leadership role reflects both her clinical excellence and her dedication to advancing high-quality ophthalmic services.Ms. Gkountelia provides a comprehensive oculoplastic, orbital and lacrimal (tear duct) service for adults and children. She previously served as Lead for Eye Casualty services for four years, heading the emergency eye clinic and working closely with Emergency Department colleagues and Clinical Leads across London to enhance ophthalmology emergency and out-of-hours care. Her private practice encompasses the full spectrum of functional and aesthetic periocular surgery, including:Upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty, Ptosis (droopy eyelid) correction, Cosmetic eyelid and brow enhancement, Management of eyelid malpositions (entropion and ectropion), Watery eyes, including external and endoscopic DCR surgery, Thyroid eye disease, Facial palsy, Blepharospasm, Complex periocular skin cancer reconstruction, including post-Mohs surgery repair, Paediatric oculoplastic surgery, Non-surgical facial aesthetic treatmentsShe qualified from the National & Kapodistrian Medical School of Athens in 2004 and completed her postgraduate ophthalmology training in Athens, Greece. She subsequently undertook extensive subspecialist fellowship training in the United Kingdom, completing three and a half years of advanced Oculoplastics, Orbital and Lacrimal fellowships in Reading, Cambridge and London. This included fellowship training within the multidisciplinary craniofacial unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where she developed particular expertise in complex periocular skin cancer reconstruction, thyroid eye disease and orbital trauma.Ms. Gkountelia works closely with dermatology, maxillofacial and oncology colleagues within specialist multidisciplinary teams, including skin cancer, Mohs and orbital MDTs, ensuring carefully planned and individualised treatment for complex cases. Her approach is discreet, thoughtful and patient-centred, with equal emphasis on restoring function and enhancing confidence.In addition to her clinical leadership role, she serves as Regional Ophthalmic Practitioner Training (OPT, based on OCCCF) Lead for North East London, supporting the development of advanced ophthalmic skills among nurses, optometrists and opticians. She remains deeply committed to education and regularly teaches ophthalmology trainees, contributes to clinical governance and supports primary care colleagues through structured teaching and referral guidance.
