Pigmentation

Our skin colour (pigmentation) is determined by the amount of melanin in our skin. It is determined by our ancestry and our gender. There are some conditions where too much or too little melanin is produced resulting in patches of differing tone. Vitiligo is where the pigment in the skin is completely lost in some areas. This can be widespread and occurs in all skin types, but is most noticeable in darker skin types where it can cause considerable distress.

In fair skinned people too much melanin produces patches or spots that are tan or brown

These dark spots usually appear on women’s faces, necks and arms. They are most commonly due to excessive sun exposure but they can also be caused by hormonal changes. Over 50% of women experience hyper-pigmentation during pregnancy (the "mask of pregancy", melasma or chloasma), which usually fades away after birth.
