Acne

Acne is a chronic skin condition that affects all young people and can persist into adult life. It causes spots to develop, usually on the face, back and chest. It is thought to arise from increased levels of sex hormones around puberty which cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge. This leads to increased levels of sebum production which block the skin pores leading to black heads, then to acne pimples or pustules and follicular rupture.

Acne is most common in adolescents - 16 to 19 year olds. It can have a considerable impact on your self-confidence and can lead to scarring. It sometimes requires aggressive treatment, however, the outlook is generally good and change can be seen within two to three months.

It is important that acne is managed appropriately by a Dermatologist to prevent long-term damage to your skin. A Dermatologist can not only diagnose and treat your acne to prevent scarring but can also reverse the scarring. This offers an improved sense of wellbeing.

Good skin care is particularly important and patients need to avoid humid environments and saunas, use of greasy cosmetics and moisturizers and avoiding occlusive bands/straps around the face.

Treatments

Most cases of acne can be controlled with a combination of topical and systemic treatments which can be prescribed by the Dermatologists at Skin Care Network.

However a few patients with severe acne will need to be treated by with oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane™) to prevent long term scarring of the face. We are able to offer a much wider range of treatments than those available on the NHS and can also offer a variety of physical treatments: chemical peels, laser treatments, microdermabrassion, photodynamic therapy, cryosurgery and steroid injections into acne cysts are all helpful in the control of acne.
